The 3 Market Types

ThaiPoll offers 3 trading mechanisms. All use USDC and end the same way — resolution, then claiming. They differ in how the price/odds are set and who your counterparty is.

🟣 AMM markets

General events whose price should move with market opinion — e.g. “Who wins the next election?”

AMM (Automated Market Maker) markets work like Polymarket. Each market has 2 outcomes: YES and NO (you can rename them, e.g. “Trump” / “Biden”).

How it works:

  • The YES + NO share prices always add up to ≈ 1 USDC, and price = implied probability (e.g. YES at 0.65 means the market sees a 65% chance).
  • Price moves by the CPMM formula (Constant Product): reserves_yes × reserves_no = k — the more people buy YES, the higher the YES price climbs.
  • Buy cheap → if your side wins, each share redeems for ~1 USDC (profit from the difference).
  • You can sell out any time before the market closes — no need to wait for the result (at the current market price).

Example: Buy $100 of YES shares when YES = 0.50 → you get ~200 shares. If YES wins, each share redeems for ~1 USDC → you get back ~$200 (after a 1% claim fee, ~$198).

🔵 DirectBet markets

1-on-1 bets, side against side — e.g. “Who wins tonight’s fight?”

DirectBet (matched betting) markets have no AMM and no moving price — the creator picks their side (e.g. YES) and puts up money, and anyone who disagrees comes to “match” the opposite side (NO) 1-on-1.

How it works:

  • The creator sets a side + a target amount, then deposits USDC.
  • Other players deposit USDC on the opposite side 1:1 until the target is filled.
  • At resolution, the winning side splits the matched pool pro-rata — getting their stake back plus a share of the losing pool.
  • Any portion that nobody matched → the creator can withdraw it in full after the market expires.

Example: The creator puts $100 on YES; others match $100 on NO → if YES wins, the YES side gets its stake back plus the NO pool (minus a 1% fee).

DirectBet suits events with 2 clear sides where people are roughly equally confident, because the payout is “fixed” — it doesn’t swing with the market like AMM.

🟡 Bookmaker markets

Lottery and sports with fixed payout odds set by the house — e.g. “Government lottery, last 2 digits”

Bookmaker (fixed-odds) markets have many options (2 to 1,024), e.g. a 2-digit lottery = 100 options (00–99). The House opens a pool to take bets and sets the payout multiplier for each option in advance.

How it works:

  • A player picks an option/number and places a bet — the payout odds are known at bet time (e.g. 90×).
  • Bet correctly → you get stake × multiplier (minus a 1% fee).
  • Bet wrong → your stake goes to the house’s pool.
  • The house uses its pool capital to back payouts (the system automatically locks reserves to guarantee it can pay).

Example: Bet number 23 with 10 USDC at 90× → if 23 is drawn, you get 10 × 90 = 900 USDC (after 1%, ~$891).

⚠️

High odds = low chance of winning. Stakes on wrong bets become the house’s profit. Please bet responsibly — see Lottery & Payout Odds.
